"I am a Yoga Association of Alberta certified teacher with a twenty year history of yoga practice. My teaching experiences range from teaching fitness for pregnancy, to coaching swimming and teaching yoga as a therapeutic tool.Classes will offer a sampling of slow, deep yoga poses, restorative poses, breath work and meditation, all of which I found supportive in my recovery from eating disorder and on my emotional healing journey.Currently, I am working on a Masters of Arts and studying a body- centered therapeutic technique called Hakomi. I am passionate about relating my experiences of healing with yoga, to others, and excited to be able to engage others in the opportunity to discover the qualities of yoga as they relate to healing of mind, body and spirit.”

What you will experience

Soft Warrior Yoga

Light, Love, Strength and Energy

Soft Warrior Yoga focuses on meditation with body and breath control as a foundation from which we can know ourselves better...

  1. learning awareness...
  2. accepting memories and emotions...
  3. welcoming our shadow side...
  4. integrating toward congruence and vigour...
  5. in touch with our body/mind in all its manifestations...
    • physical,
    • emotional,
    • spiritual
    • energetic

Unique aspects

Unlike the yoga popularized on TV and videos, Soft Warrior Yoga presents a softer, gentler physical approach. However, the Asanas (poses) provide both a muscular and stretching "workout".

Another aspect that is different from a majority of yoga approaches is the supportive poses that are practised. Instructors and students take time to work with small groups supporting the efforts of a single group member, in turn.

This provides an unusually safe and encouraging environment.

Experienced yogis and absolute newcomers will find the total process to be

  • demanding yet gentle...
  • arduous yet energizing...
  • wearing yet satisfying...
  • a true yin/yang experience...
  • appropriate for all levels of expertise and knowledge...

BE AWARE! This is often life-changing

The energetic and emotional bodies often "surprise" Soft Warrior Yoga students with a welling up of past memories, buried traumas, dark shadow recollections...

this often results in powerful emotional moments.

The ambience of a Soft Warrior Yoga studio is such that these moments are accepted, supported, and used to move a student toward healing, integration and congruence.

You will move toward light
You will experience love
You will gain in strength
You will delight in the joy of your energetic being!

Yona's story

For the past two to three years I have referred to myself as a ‘person who USED TO have and eating disorder’. In so saying I opened the door for myself to an even deeper level of self- knowledge and understanding of my own process, and what supported me in getting to this point.

I have identified many factors in my recovery process. Ongoing support and a relationship with a talented bio-energetic therapist have figured largely into my progress.

Yoga, too, has an esteemed place in this process for me. My personal experience has been one of ongoing healing in a supportive community as I deepened my practice and philosophical understanding. The type of yoga I have practiced has provided me with a channel to my energetic body and a tool for accessing and releasing emotional hurdles.

Although I had practiced yoga sporadically for the last fifteen to twenty years, it was what I have come to call ‘competitive yoga‘. It is only in the last few years that I began to see what an important place it has in my life.

Yoga has the unique distinction amongst the many forms of exercise available to us, as one that involves mind, body and spirit.

Yoga can be practiced to any depth, from a very superficial physical level of stretching to a profound spiritual one. The level that a person practices yoga at is dependant solely on that individual’s desires and needs.

T.K.V. Desikachar says in the introduction of his book The Heart of Yoga “The essence of my father’s teachings is this: it is not that the person needs to accommodate him- or herself to yoga, but rather the yoga practice must be tailored to fit each person.” He also goes on to say in the next paragraph “This implies that progress on the path of yoga means different things for different people.” (page xix)

I have taken this to heart in deepening my own yoga practice. In choosing to study in the Yoga Association of Alberta’s teacher training program, I have also set myself the goal of availing the many aspects of yoga to people who struggle with similar difficulties to those I have had.

I understand the pain and feelings of stuckness in a situation that people around you seem unable to comprehend and the resulting frustration and, at times, feelings of panic. My personal experiences have led me to see that yoga can provide a much needed tool in living with those feelings and reducing some of the anxiety. This, in turn, can allow space to deal with the problems at hand.
